The first academic session of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar is expected to begin from September 15 this year, official confirmed it on Sunday.
The construction work is carried out on a war footing to begin the much awaited academic session of Bhubaneswar AIIMS, Union Health Secretary PK Pradhan said during his visit to the state capital on Sunday.
He said that the construction work will be completed soon and the faculties for the medical college have been appointed. The staffs will join the college next month.
Initially, the number of seats for the MBBS course will be 50 this year. The seats will be increased to 150 next year 2013.
Earlier, Union health minister Gulam Nabi Azad had said that the first academic session of Bhubaneswar AIIMS will begin by end of September this year.
Previous reports suggested that the construction work of the hospital will be completed by next year so that the students, who will pursue the MBBS this year, would be able to get facility.
The director and the faculties for the AIIMS have already been selected. Ashok Mohapatra, now head of Neurosurgery department of AIIMS, New Delhi, has been appointed as the director of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.
Odisha health minister Prasanna Acharya said that initially the MBBS students of AIIMS will do their practical at Unit-6 Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
