Makhdoom Shahabuddin nominated as new Pakistan PM

The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has nominated senior leader Makhdoom Shahabuddin for the post of Prime Minister after the Supreme Court disqualified Yousuf Raza Gilani in a contempt case.

The decision was made early this morning at a meeting chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari. A special session of the National Assembly will be convened on Thursday to formally elect the new Leader of the House.

The new PM is believed to be just a stop-gap arrangement. Fresh polls are likely in Pakistan so that Gilani returns to power. New laws are also expected to be formulated to snub the Supreme Court and Judiciary so that a Prime Minister cannot be disqualified in contempt cases.
